The history of relations between documenta and Eastern Europe is still largely unexplored territory. The documenta archiv will address this desideratum with an international cooperation project.

To kick off the research project, the workshop "The documenta and Eastern Europe" took place at the documenta archiv on June 16 and 17, 2023.

Today, documenta is considered one of the most important recurring exhibition formats in the world. As a "model case for the production of art history" (Walter Grasskamp), it exemplifies the history of the reception of modern art. It attracts attention to artists and shapes their careers. In 2025, the Kassel "World Art Exhibition" celebrates its 70th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the documenta archiv is looking back to the summer of 1955: an exhibition project focuses on the first documenta and the canon of modernism.
