Karl Oskar Blase, the “face of documenta”, would have turned one hundred years old on March 24, 2025. The Kassel-based graphic designer and professor of art and visual communication had been working for documenta since 1964 and had a unique influence on its appearance. To celebrate his milestone birthday, the documenta archiv is dedicating a multimedia studio exhibition to him in its Reading Room.

A new immediate approach to the very first document in 1955 has been created by the Art History and Theory department of the Kunsthochschule Kassel. An impressive virtual reality reconstruction of the four main exhibitions halls of the Museum Fridericianum bring to life parts of the original art installation.  The documenta archiv as joint cooperator supported the project. From our archival holdings image material offered details to individual art works  as well as their precise locations.

Further information to the project can be found here.
