Karl Oskar Blase, the “face of documenta”, would have turned one hundred years old on March 24, 2025. The Kassel-based graphic designer and professor of art and visual communication had been working for documenta since 1964 and had a unique influence on its appearance. To celebrate his milestone birthday, the documenta archiv is dedicating a multimedia studio exhibition to him in its Reading Room.

Joseph Beuys, the man with the hat, known for his use of felt and the Fettecke, or corner of fat—thirty years after his death he appears as a visionary ahead of his time. In a fascinating film, Andres Veiel has succeeded in making him come alive once again, largely through archive materials. In cooperation with the documenta archiv, Stiftung 7000 Eichen, and documenta forum, Filmladen Kassel presents a preview of the much-discussed film on May 11, 2017 at 8 pm at Gloria Kino. documenta archiv is pleased to have contributed visual materials for the film.

 

Following the screening, director Andres Veiel shares insights about his work, in conversation with journalist Elke Bockhorst.
