Proposition List #2: An Art-Lecture on Charlotte Solomon's "Life? or Theater?"
Last year, the season in the Schauspielhaus Foyer began with a staged reading about women artists from the first documenta in 1955. The second edition of "Vorschlagsliste" (Proposition List) now once again delves into the depths of archival work. Using theatrical means, the attempt is made to visualize the complexity of artistic and curatorial processes that can be grasped in the archive.
The performance in May 2022 ended with an audience survey: Which artist should be the focus of the second edition?
The decision fell on the German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon (1917 Berlin - 1943 Auschwitz), whose dramatic work "Leben? oder Theater? Ein Singespiel" was shown at the dOCUMENTA (13) in the Fridericianum on the basis of selected gouaches.
Her life's work, comprising 769 sheets, tells her traumatic family story from the First World War to the time of the Second World War - a tragedy between persecution, fear and hope, between loneliness and longing for love. Created in 1941 and 1942, Salomon's gouaches reflect growing up in the family environment of the Berlin bourgeoisie and the looming threat of National Socialism.
Created in 1941 and 1942, Salomon's gouaches reflect growing up in the family environment of the Berlin bourgeoisie and the looming threat of National Socialism. Salomon carefully supplemented her scenic biography with notes on accompanying musical recordings for each print. The characteristic equivalence of writing and image anticipates the expressive power of graphic novels and shows a particular closeness to screenplays, storyboards, or stage works with classical stage directions.
In the Art Lecture on June 1, Charlotte Salomon returns to the Rotunda of the Fridericianum 11 years after Carolyn Christov Bakargiev's dOCUMENTA (13). The actors explore the aesthetic radicality and multimedia facets of her work in dialogue with Kerstin Brätsch's installation Mimikry (2022-2023).
Idea/Concept: Katja Prussas (dramaturge) with the participation of Lisa Natalie Arnold, Annett Kruschke, Johann Jürgens, Christina Weiser (actors), in collaboration with the documenta archiv.
