"Expressionism and Colonialism. Emil Nolde"
The lecture will focus on questions of the appropriation of indigenous cultures around 1900 in the context of Expressionism. Prof. Dr. Rebekka Habermas will use the example of Emil Nolde and his journey to the German South Sea colonies to illuminate the interconnections between expressionism and colonialism.
This will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Astrid Becker (Deputy Director, Nolde Stiftung Seebüll), Dr. Birgitta Coers (Director, documenta archiv), and the artist Mischa Kuball.
