Venue: Neue Galerie, Kassel

You will find the accompanying program to the exhibition at: www.museum-kassel.de

The Neue Galerie has always been closely associated with documenta: from November 2019, the permanent exhibition "about: documenta" will offer an opportunity to explore the history of this internationally important series of exhibitions.

The unique feature of "about: documenta" lies in the combination of a direct view of original works of art in conjunction with documentary material and film footage and the use of staging strategies that each respective documenta invented: the entrance surprises with a media collage, works from the collection of the Neue Galerie are situated in the central rooms, the cabinet gallery spaces offer background information to individual documenta exhibitions and the "documenta lab" invites visitors to participate. In addition, ruangrupa, with its artistic directorship of the upcoming documenta 15, has designed its own space.

The aim of the presentation is to enable visitors to experience the development of the institution - from an initially uniquely conceived, locally anchored art event to an instance for canonizing the contemporary to a globally active platform for discussion. It offers an overview of what was and is, without claiming to create a complete picture of the series of exhibitions.
