Heinz-Günter Mebusch: Wolf Vostell, Gelatin silver print on baryt paper, 24 x 18 cm, Inventory Number: documenta archiv, MS, Edition Mebusch.

Since the 1990s the documenta archiv owns an important collection of over 200 high-quality photographic artist portraits. It consists of images of well-known artists such as Joseph Beuys, Karl Otto Götz, Meret Oppenheim, Gerhard Richter, Wolf Vostell and many more. At close range the head and chest portraits captivate through the intense direct gaze of each respective artist.

Heinz Günter Mebusch (1952-2001), a student of the famous photographer Otto Steinert (1915-1978) created these photos and named the series "Journey to Planet Ars". Today he has nearly been forgotten. Then, however, he was known to all the important artists of his time.

In terms of both content and quality the edition belongs to the particularly superior enrichments of the collection of the documenta archiv. For the studio exhibition 39 portraits are selected of artists who participated at documenta over the years.
